Hey guys, today my Hire Me page went live. That’s mean that from now on, I’m offering consulting services for things like putting together a website, site design, switching to the Mac, and more.

The lowest price on those is $60 an hour. My time is valuable, and anyone who becomes a client is going to get top notch work.

But I know many of you can’t afford that and I hate not being able to give something to my regular readers…

So I’ve decided to give away five free consulting spots. That’s right…you get hundreds (if not thousands or more) of dollars of value; for free.

Some of those are ongoing, and some don’t cost as much as others, so I’m giving a free credit of $350 to five people who are reading this post.

So what do you have to do? All you need to do is leave a comment below telling me what service (or services) you’d like, and that’s it. You need to be one of the first five, though, and an offer this good is going to be filled up soon, so make sure to leave a comment down below and we’ll get working.

Post image for Unlocking vs. Jailbreaking: What do these Terms mean?

A lot of people are probably wondering why I take so many questions from one particular website, lockergnome.net

The truth is, I’m pretty much addicted to Chris Pirillo and his videos. I’m also a really big fan of his Q@A website, so I think it’s safe to say that you can expect a lot more videos answering questions from that site in the future.

And that’s exactly what you’re going to get today.

Although I’m not as interested in phones as I am computers, I still have accumulated a bit of knowledge about the subject that I know a lot of you may be eager to hear.

So today I’m taking a question asked by Raydvd, which is: What is Unlocking and is Jailbreaking the same thing?

We’ve pretty much all heard of jailbreaking, and most of us know it has something to do with iOS devices, but I’d guess many of you don’t know exactly what it does.

As for unlocking, even people into technology might not know what that means, especially since it’s sort of becoming a dated term at this point.

So let me clear things up for you:

Unlocking is when you take out the SIM card (the device that powers the wireless network) from the carrier you bought from and put in a different SIM card.

Why would someone want to do this?

  • The network they bought the device from isn’t fast enough for their needs
  • The network they are on (AT@T, we’re all looking at you) isn’t reliable, and is frequently getting little or no bars
  • Perhaps the most common reason in this economy is simply to save money

Jailbreaking was traditionally a term specific to Apple devices that run iOS, but at this point is starting to become synonymous with any sort of hacking, so it can become difficult to discover what it really means.

To stick with the legacy term, though, jailbreaking does not only unlock the device for iOS, but also makes certain changes to the OS, such as expose, other unofficial app stores like Cydia, etc.

So what do I advise in regards to whether or not you should do this?

I would recommend not to unlock or jailbreak a device unless there’s a feature you just need to have.

The reasons are:

  1. You will void your warrantee (which is key if the device is from Apple), and…
  2. Devices that are hacked in this way tend to crash quite a bit and have many issues (which can’t easily be fixed if you void your warrantee).

If you do choose to, though, be careful, because a lot of things that claim to jailbreak your device are only scams that will steal money out of your iTunes account, so make sure to only use trusted source.

As well, be very careful with your device, because since you’re voiding your warrantee, an attempted jailbreak could turn into a two or three hundred dollar expense for a new phone.
